1935 Issue of Canadian Banknotes

"Jubilee" Issue

1935 saw the issue of the first banknotes from the newly formed Bank of Canada. It was also planned to issue a special 25 dollar note to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V's reign.
Because public demand for 25 cent notes had dwindled significantly, it was decided to drop the 25 cent note altogether.
New collectors might assume that the printed numbers found on Bank of Canada banknotes are "serial numbers". This is not the case.

Notes were printed in sheets of 4 each. The number found on each note is actually the sheet number, and all notes on each sheet share the same number.
Each note on the sheet was assigned a "Check Letter" to distinguish it from the other notes.
Check Letters A, B, C or D are printed as shown.

These notes use a seven digit sheet number, which allows the issue of 10 million sets of 4 notes. In case more than that quantity of notes are ordered a "Series Letter" is added as a prefix to the sheet number, which allowed the sequence to be repeated.

All banknotes which are translated to French were assigned the Series Letter "F".
