|
1954 Issue of Canadian Banknotes The "Canadian Landscapes" Issue The 1937 Issue of Canadian banknotes started a precedent of using the British Monarch's effigy on the face of most circulating banknotes. The death of King George VI precipitated the need for a re-design and new issue of notes. The monarch's portrait was moved from the centre of the notes to the left side, simply to reduce the image being damaged by wear from the folding of notes during everyday use. Instead of using various allegory scenes on the back of each denomination it was decided to use landscape scenes from across Canada. After the first series of 1954 issue notes were released to the public, the government received a huge backlash when word spread the the hair behind the Queen's ear appeared to contain an image of a demonic face. This was corrected by 1956 by modifying the highlights and shading of her hair, thus removing the details which led to the controversy. |

BC-45b 1 Dollar "Standard Serial Number" (Beattie-Rasminsky) VIGNETTES: Front Left - The 1867-1967 Centennial symbol. Front Right - H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. Back - Original Parliament Buildings in 1916. These regular issue notes with standard serial numbers were delivered to the Bank of Canada with the signatures of the Deputy Governor (J.R. Beattie) and the Governor (L. Rasminsky) engraved directly onto the printing plates before the finished notes were delivered to the Bank of Canada, following a change in the process which was introduced in 1965. Prior to this change notes were delivered to the Bank of Canada without any printed signatures. The signatures were added to the notes in a separate process (by the letterpress method with black ink) at the Bank of Canada. Note: See Appendix A for the locations of the plate numbers on these notes. |
