1954 Issue of Canadian Banknotes

The "Canadian Landscapes" Issue

The 1937 Issue of Canadian banknotes started a precedent of using the British Monarch's effigy on the face of most circulating banknotes.
The death of King George VI precipitated the need for a re-design and new issue of notes. The monarch's portrait was moved from the centre of the notes to the left side, simply to reduce the image being damaged by wear from the folding of notes during everyday use.
Instead of using various allegory scenes on the back of each denomination it was decided to use landscape scenes from across Canada.

After the first series of 1954 issue notes were released to the public, the government received a huge backlash when word spread the the hair behind the Queen's ear appeared to contain an image of a demonic face. This was corrected by 1956 by modifying the highlights and shading of her hair, thus removing the details which led to the controversy.

Continuing a process which was started in 1937, each note received a unique "serial number".
A two letter prefix was added to each serial number (expressed as a fraction). The upper character designates the series while the lower letter was assigned to that denomination.
Each set of ten million notes were given a different series letter. Twenty different series letters were approved for use, so a total of 200 million possible notes could be printed for each denomination letter.
If more notes were required, a second (or third or fourth) denomination letter was used, and both the series letter and serial number sequences were re-started:

In addition, for the first time notes which were damaged during the printing process were not replaced with identical notes.
A special series of notes were printed whose serial number did not have to be identical to the damaged note.
As damaged notes were discovered, replacement notes were inserted into the parcel. These notes can be distinguished from a standard note by the presence of an asterisk (*) to the left of the serial number:

1967 Issue of Canadian Banknotes

The "Canadian Centennial" Issue

To commemorate Canada's Centennial year the 1954 design of 1 dollar banknotes was modified:
- The Centennial symbol was added as the left side vignette.
- The words "CENTENNIAL OF CANADIAN CONFEDERATION" were added to the top center border, and their French translation was added to the bottom center border of both sides of the note.
- The view of the the original centre block of the Parliament Buildings as they were in 1916 (before they were destroyed by fire) replaced the landscape scene found on the back of the standard 1954 1 dollar note.

The following tables detail which letters were assigned to each denomination:
