2001 Issue of Canadian Banknotes

The "Journey" Issue

The theme for this issue is Canadian culture, history and achievement.

A series of Braille indentations were added to the top right corner of the face to aid those with vision problems, and features were added to allow the blind to feed any note into a hand held device that could read its denomination. This feature took the form of a bar code printed beside the serial number on the back of each note.

For the 2001 issue of $5 and $10 banknotes a number of security features were added, but the majority of security features were not added until 2004 (see below the $10 examples for more details).

Each note received a unique 7 digit "serial number" as well as a three letter prefix.

Each set of ten million notes were given a different series letter. Twenty-three different series letters were approved for use, so a total of 230 million possible notes could be printed for each denomination letter.
If more notes were required, an alternate denomination letter was used, and both the series letter and serial number sequences were re-started.
A three letter prefix was added to each serial number:
- The first character represents the printing company (BAI = A or B; CBN = E, F or H).
- The second character represents the denomination while the second letter represents the series.
- The third character represents the series (see table below for the list of series letters used).

The Story Behind The Old Veteran

If you look on the right side of the back of the 2001 10 dollar note you will see an old veteran standing at attention near the Ottawa War Memorial.
His name is Robert William Metcalfe and he died in 2014 at the age of 90. This is a very brief story about his amazing life:

That he managed to live to that age is rather remarkable, given what happened in the Second World War. Born in England , he was one of the 400,000 members of the British Expeditionary Force sent to the mainland where they found themselves facing the new German warfare technique - the Blitzkrieg.

He was treating a wounded comrade when he was hit in the legs by shrapnel. En route to hospital, his ambulance came under fire from a German tank, which then miraculously ceased fire. He assumed that the tank commander spotted the red cross on the side of the ambulance.

He was part of the evacuation from Dunkirk on HMS Grenade, two of the sister ships with them were sunk.

After his recovery he was sent to allied campaigns in North Africa and Italy . En route, his ship was chased by the German battleship Bismarck. In North Africa he served under General Montgomery against the Desert Fox, Rommel.

Sent into the Italian campaign, he met his future wife (a lieutenant and physio-therapist in a Canadian hospital). They were married in the morning by the mayor of the Italian town, and again in the afternoon by a British padre.

After the war they settled in Chatham, Ontario where he went into politics and became the warden (chairman) of the county. After he retired he and his wife moved to Ottawa.
At the age of 80 he wrote a book about his experiences.

One day out of the blue he received a call from a government official asking him to go downtown to have his photo taken. He wasn't told what the photo was for, or why they chose him. "He had no idea he would be on the bill." his daughter said.

And now you know the story behind the old veteran on the $10 bill.

A reflective strip was added to the left of (and partially covering) the main vignette on the left side of the face.

Back - Who cares. You'll be so busy laughing at the front you won't care what's on the back (but wouldn't it be great if the back had a vignette of the bridge of the Starship Enterprise?)

A very popular way of breaking the law that forbids anyone from defacing Canadian banknotes appeared at some point due to the fact that Sir Wilfred Laurier's portrait bears a strong resemblance to Leonard Nimoy's "Mr. Spock" character in the Star Trek movies.

While the Government of Canada was not amused, the rest of the world certainly was...

Back - Who cares. You'll be so busy laughing at the front you won't care what's on the back (but wouldn't it be great if the back had a vignette of Hogwarts?)

Not satisfied with only "Spocking" Sir Wilfred's effigy, another very popular way of breaking the law appeared at some point due to the fact that his portrait bears a strong resemblance to Alan Rickman's "Professor Snape" character in the Harry Potter movies.

Again, the Government of Canada was not amused, but the rest of the world thinks this is hysterically funny...
